There are no strict pre-requisites for admission into the WSET program. At The Art Institute of Vancouver, we prefer our students to be both challenged and engaged in their chosen course of study which means placing students in the WSET level that is right for them. Unlike other organisations that offer wine certification, we do not force a student to start at a level that they will find too easy and any one of our admissions team will be able to assist you with advice on the best level to start at. The criteria we use to assess that advice will be things like prior work experience and existing formal wine certification. We also respect credentialing from other organisations so it is possible to start directly in our Advanced program and in some instances, the Diploma program without taking every preceding WSET level.
A quick guide to the respective WSET levels is as follows:
Level 1 - Foundation
A course suitable for someone with little or no wine background or formal wine training
Level 2 - Intermediate
A course suitable for those with relevant industry background, some formalized wine education or the well-read enthusiast.
Level 3 – Advanced
Intensive course of study only suitable for those with extensive background in wine or formalized education through other wine certification body.
Level 4 – Diploma
The highest level of wine education offered and the only WSET course for which a formal pre-requisite applies. Students wishing to study this course MUST hold either the WSET Advanced Certificate or the International Sommelier Guild Diploma.
In addition to the assistance offered in which course to start in, if you would like any advice on opportunities or careers within the wine industry, our Wine Department Head would be happy to discuss paths for career development. Please note that we do not offer a full careers service for students of this program. |
